Dear Love Stories Reader,
For those of you who are new here: welcome.
My name is Eleanor Flowers. I am a poetess, a chanteuse and an artist and this is your official invitation to my next poetry and art show at Hos Arne in Oslo on the 15th February.
This is your invitation to Shopping for God.
Please share with your besties and be sure to reserve your seats - this is a one-off event and seating is limited. I want to invite you, just for one evening, to take a breather from reality and step into my world of words. There will be fashion, there will be music, there will be art, there will be screaming (yes you read that right, this is a catharsis) and there will be poetry.
You can get your tickets here.
Shopping for God is a coming-of-age tale of my own restless search for faith and meaning as a younger woman. I looked everywhere: in Paris, in Hong Kong, in London, in Oslo, in the shopping malls, in the Parisian underworld, at the bottom of a wine bottle, packaged in a pill blister, in meditation centres, in yoga studios, on a screen.
Ever since I was a little girl, I have loved dressing up and putting on a show. The wider world can be cruel to ambitious little girls who love to stand up in ball gowns and tell stories but this tendency, along with a drive to make things look beautiful, is what I feel most natural doing. When I say beautiful, I don’t mean beautiful in the way that fashion magazines and film casting directors often mean by beautiful, I mean beautiful in the way that a poet and artist can look at the plainest of objects or the most dejected of city spaces and see the nucleus of a work of art.
Shopping for God is a deeply personal body of work. It is my story and I feel very privileged to share my journey with you. Shopping for God is my way of trying to make sense of being a woman in a world that loves shopping, of understanding my love for the material and knowing when that love fulfills me and when it takes me into a place of discontent. It is my way of making sense of wanting to become a mother in a system where we have to consume to live, the very same system that is making Earth uninhabitable for our children. It’s my way of questioning what it means to have grown up looking at naked women in famous paintings and then to make myself that naked woman (both literally in my paintings and metaphorically, as sharing my art makes me feel so vulnerable) on my own creative terms.
It’s my way of trying to make peace with all that has become, so that I can move forward and fall in love with this life.
Love,
Eleanor Flowers 💐
