an email to my fear
Hi fear,
We need to set some boundaries. Again.
First of all, I love you, I really do. In a weird way you are my best friend. You are around way more than anyone else for a start so I have to acknowledge you for that. Of all of the things I have had to face, facing you again and again is the thing that has made me the strongest. And I know, I know you first came on the scene to help me and you do do that but you also have a habit of getting unbelievably over-excited, need I say greedy, and I can’t keep giving you my undivided attention.
So please: stop dressing up as different random things and pretending they are threats when actually it’s just you. I’m not going to do anything stupid! And if I do, I will love myself anyway. We won’t be alone; there are lots of people who love me, and the person you make me - for better or for worse, and together we are all going to get through this life OK.
Ironically, I am a bit scared about sending you this email, but probably not as scared as you are going to be to receive it. But fear: emails aren’t that scary!! We won’t die and then one day we will and then we will wish we’d learned to co-exist together a little better and done the scary things that help us grow.
I’m starting to understand that every time you pop up, there’s something important there that I need to do or understand. I suppose, in that way, you’re like a backwards guardian angel. It’s like Carl Jung once wrote in a letter to a friend: “where your fear is, there is your task”.
I won’t run from you anymore, fear. Nothing is ever going to be perfect, or completely under control so come lie beside me in the open sea and let’s float.
I’m going to do the things that scare us, because I need to keep on sharing my art with the world and I need you to keep training me to be strong enough to do that. I have shows to make.
I can hold you while we watch the stars together.
